Meet the Board

John Klenert
President / Founder
John Klenert retired from AT&T after a wonderful 25 year career primarily in AT&T Government Services where he held positions in sales and marketing, project management and public relations. He has been involved in LEAGUE since its inception back in 1987 serving in many capacities including LEAGUE national president. He founded the LEAGUE Foundation in 1995 during the New Orleans LEAGUE five year planning conference. Today, besides the LEAGUE Foundation Board, he has been honored to be a member of the Board of Directors of several local and national organizations including GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, One In Ten/Reel Affirmations and DC Vote. John lives in Washington DC most of the time but summers in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
Margaret Burd
Vice President
President & CEO of Magpie Software Services Corp, Denver, CO.  Margaret Burd founded Magpie Software, a software development services company, in 2001. She was previously Director of Engineering at Lucent Technologies Bell Labs, leading development for mobile internet and other telecommunications applications. While at Bell Labs she was an inventor on two patents. She has a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Missouri State University. Margaret was a founding member of LEAGUE at AT&T in Denver and served as a LEAGUE National Co-chair. She was a founder of EQUAL at Lucent where she served in a variety of leadership roles. In 1994, Margaret and her life partner of 33 years, Dr. Rebecca Brinkman helped found the ATL Foundation, which provides assistance to lesbians in need of financial help as a result of ill health. They continue to serve on ATL’s Board of Directors. Margaret was a National Gay & Lesbian Task Force board member for many years. As a founder and current board member of Coolest Women We Know (CWWK) and Profit Matters, Margaret helps provide networking opportunities for senior women in high tech companies and business plan review and other help to women starting businesses. Margaret also serves on the boards of three small companies.
Joel Stango
Treasurer
Joel Stango is a founding LEAGUE Foundation member and was elected as LEAGUE Foundation  Treasurer in 2014.  He is currently employed as a Service Executive with the AT&T Signature Client Group and has supported AT&T sales efforts since 1990.  After serving on their capital campaign committee which raised over $3 million, Joel was appointed to the board of the Delaware Humane Association in 2014 and currently leads the DHA development committee.   Since October 2011, Joel has served on the board of Brandywine Gateway Neighbors (formerly INF) which provides urban planning, development and housing renewal to Wilmington’s Eastside.  He is also a past president and current board member of the Midtown Brandywine Neighborhood Association working on streetscape efforts for the Wilmington neighborhood.  Joel has worked with the capital committee of Easter Seals of Delaware and has participated with the annual Volleyball event for more than 10 years.  He also, serves on the Transportation Committee of the Wilmington Renaissance Corporation.
Mindy Morgan
Secretary
Mindy is currently the secretary for the Foundation. A former President of the Foundation, Co-Chair of LEAGUE, co-founder of LEAGUE Arizona and planner of LEAGUE conferences, she currently serves as secretary of the LEAGUE Foundation.  Mindy works as a human resources generalist for a local university. In her spare time, she volunteers for local nonprofits, travels, reads, and enjoys what the world has to offer. Mindy shares her Phoenix castle with her two crazy kittens, Muy and Olive.
J. Forsyth
Executive Director
J. is currently the Technical Director of External & Legislative Affairs at AT&T.  J. was named the New Executive Director of the LEAGUE Foundation in 2014 and fills the shoes of long-term LGBT advocate, Charles Eader, whose leadership in LEAGUE dates back to 2001. J. has supported LEAGUE in several volunteer capacities since 2009.  J. and his husband have been strong supporters of the LEAGUE Foundation’s LGBT scholarship program and are very honored and privileged to support this organization that makes such profound impacts to the education of LGBT youth.
Mark Barfield
Board Member
Mark is a marketing professional at AT&T where he has held positions in Sales, Operations and Marketing. Mark is currently a Lead Channel Marketing Manager on the AT&T Business Solutions Marketing team responsible for developing integrated marketing campaigns designed to grow mobility, security, cloud, and transport revenue across medium to large businesses.  Mark is committed to advancing education opportunities for LGBTQ youth.  He also serves as LEAGUE at AT&T’s Chief Operating Officer.  He previously served on the LEAGUE National Board as Public Relations Officer and Communications Chair.  Mark received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of California Berkeley and his MBA from the University of Phoenix. Mark currently calls Dallas, TX home with his partner Bobby.
Alan Beckstead
Board Member
Assistant Vice President of Network Planning for AT&T. Alan has over 30 years in various departments with SBC and AT&T. Currently he oversees the Network Optimization team for the ABS, and Mobility Networks. As an electrical engineer – fund raising was not a natural direction to pursue as a volunteer for non-profits. Alan made the jump into fundraising when he joined the board of directors of St. Louis Effort for AIDS in the early 1990’s. He has been involved in fund development for non-profit organizations ever since. Alan lives in Sonoma County, California with his partner of 20 years. He is also on the board of directors for the Sebastopol Senior Center working on issues related to LGBTQ retired community.
Mark Carden
Board Member
Mark is pleased to join the LEAGUE Foundation Board. He remembers fondly the excitement and joy when the Foundation was formed and has been a supporter since.   He also serves as an advisor to LEAGUE at AT&T. Mark has been with AT&T for 26 years starting off in Kansas City, MO in telemarketing/sales. He held various sales and sales support roles in the years following his start with the company. He is also excited to work with all members, officers and board members in growing the organization and partnering with internal and external organizations. Mark believes the most important work taking place in the GLBT community is taking place in the workplace. How someone feels at work, being safe, secure and happy extrapolates to outside the company. He looks forward in honoring qualified candidates of the LGBT community in furthering their education by attending college. Mark resides in Smyrna, GA and loves to travel to see friends and family.
Joe Gauss
Board Member
Joe is a Clinical Coordinator working in the Telemetry / Stroke Nursing Unit at Northshore University HealthSystem – Skokie Hospital in Skokie, Illinois. Joe previously had a long-time career at AT&T and was LEAGUE Co-President 1998-2000.  Joe is also part of The Brotherhood of Saint Gregory, a Christian Community of The Episcopal Church.  Joe is active in Brotherhood and Parish Ministries.  
Dr. Skip Hart
Board Member
Dr. Skip is the owner/founder of AskDrSkip.com, LLC serving the DFW metroplex and is a leading physician in holistic health as an author, educator and film contributor (Mercier Movie). He specializes in Infertility, Endometriosis, Pelvic Pain, PCOS & Hormonal Balance with an emphasis in Women’s Health and alternative medicine. Dr. Skip is Board Certified, Diplomate in Naturopathic Medicine, N.B.E.N.Q.A. and Board Certified, Diplomate, Pastoral Medical Sciences, Pastoral Medical Association. Helping people around the world is a passion of Dr. Skip’s and he has worked in many impoverished countries helping the needy in areas of rural countries spanning from Mexico to India. Dr. Skip is privileged to serve on the LEAGUE Foundation Board in support of LGBTQ Youth Education.
Ron Kirk
Board Member
Ron Kirk served as Treasurer for the LEAGUE Foundation for ten years, and has been a Board member since 1997. He is the Vice President & Controller for Structured Employment Economic Development Corporation (Seedco), a New York City-based national non-profit organization that advances economic opportunity for people, businesses and communities in need. He resides in Hoboken, NJ with his partner Timothy.
Art Nava
Board Member
He served as the first national co-chair of LEAGUE, the LGBTQ AT&T employee organization. He has been actively involved locally and nationally in the LGBTQ community and currently is on the board of Gay for Good’s Boston chapter. He resides in Lowell, MA with his husband Rich, and is active with a Unitarian Universalist congregation in Boston.
Mark Patterson
Board Member
Mark started as a Call Center Manager with Ameritech (1998) in Cellular Director Assistance. He is currently part of BVoIP (Business Voice of IP) in ATO supporting IPFlex (IP Flexible Reach), VDNA. (Voice DNA) and VoIP Technology Reliability Center & Fault Management (NRC-FM) . Mark holds a degree from Anderson University in Organizational Leadership, where he is a member of the Lambda Zeta, the Anderson University Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honors Society. Mark is looking into a graduate degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Mark was the 2016 LEAGUE at AT&T National Chief Executive Officer, 2013 – 2015 National Board member. He received the 2014 LEAGUE at AT&T National Board Member of the Year award.
Ernie Renteria
Board Member
Ernie has been actively involved locally and nationally in the LGBT community for over 30 years, having served in various Employee Organizations in leadership positions such as: President and Vice President of the local Austin LEAGUE at AT&T Chapter (previously Spectrum), Vice President Membership for the Austin HACEMOS Chapter, Committee Chair for the Austin HACEMO Scholarship Committee and VP-Membership for the Austin PWSWB (now Women of AT&T). Other local experience includes: Austin LGBTQ community, Officer and Board member of ALLGO (Austin Latino Lesbian & Gay Organization). He has been employed with SWBT/SBC/AT&T for over 35 years and is currently based in Austin, Texas, and retired as a Lead Channel Manager in Consumer Wireline & Direct Marketing Department for the Home Solutions Business Unit. Ernie is single and enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, mentoring and my 2 boys (dogs) Colt & Martini.
Diego Sanchez
Board Member
Director of Policy for PFLAG, a native of Augusta, GA and long-time Massachusetts resident, Diego was previously Senior Policy Advisor to Congressman Barney Frank until the Representative’s retirement in 2013. Diego made history with that appointment, being the first openly transgender person to work as a senior legislative staff member on Capitol Hill. Accredited in Public Relations, Diego earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a major in Public Relations from the University of Georgia, where today he serves on the Journalism College’s Alumni Advisory Board and is a member of G-Club, the University’s Letterman Club as the only male who earned his letter on the women’s tennis team. Diego is a Senior Fellow of UMass Boston’s Emerging Leaders Program in the College of Management.
